Well-Being: Winter Skin Saver

Winter is sticking around awhile longer.  A time for snow, cozy fires, hunkering down with a good book and a glass of wine.  Unfortunately, one of the side nasty effects of winter can be dry skin and that can mean damage to our skin.  Who wants that, right?!?  When you spend most of your time either outside in cold dry air to then return to the indoors and warm dry air, it wreaks absolute havoc on your skin.

To stave off the effects of winter dryness, moisturizing is key!  According to the experts at wholeliving.com and Barbara Close, founder and president of Naturopathica Holistic Health and author of “Well Being: Rejuvenating Recipes for Body and Soul, there are some simple things you can do by using products that are easily obtainable from your local grocery store, one of which is a simple combination of oils that will  help moisturize and protect your face.  Mix equal parts of avocado oil and evening primrose oil in a sealed container. Be sure to cleanse your face before applying.  Take 5-6 drops of the oil mixture and massage into skin and place a warm washcloth over your face for a minute.   You are now ready to face the cold and wind of the outdoors as well as the dry heat indoors. Doesn’t get much simpler!

(In the DC metro area, Wegmans grocery stores carries both of the oils needed… prices vary by location.)

Well-Being: Sunscreen Safety

This post goes hand in hand with one from earlier today…The Sunscreen Smokescreen. So now you know how, when and the amount of sunscreen to apply. How about WHICH sunscreen to apply??? We have a son with sensitive skin and have tried many sunscreens to no avail. We have been using Blue Lizard but may have to rethink that as it is not the safest option out there. Another tip, if you have a child with senstive skin, avoid spray sunscreens as they contain chemicals that wreak havoc on tots and adults with rash prone skin. Check out this link to find the sunscreen that is right for you and your family. Happy skin safe sunning!!
